About Groups

Why Join a Small Group?

Adult Small Groups meet throughout the week at various locations in various forms. We believe that Small Groups are at the very heart of what we do as a church. They are the foremost place in which relationships are built and in which people connect with God through prayer, worship, and Bible study. Small groups also work together to love their neighborhoods and to meet needs within our church. People often find that they discover some of their passions and abilities in the midst of meeting with and working with their small groups.

If you don't find a group that works for you, we encourage you to start your own group with 2 or 3 friends. Some suggestions of what to do when you meet are:

1. Share the highs and lows from your week (a basic form of the Daily Examen, which you can learn more about here)

2. Read and discuss a portion of the Bible

3. Pray for each other and for the friends of each other

Here is one person's experience in a Woo Small Group:

I imagined myself as a dark cloud, looming over the other spiritually resplendent people in my group. By the gentle prompting of the group leader and the most minute particle of my own will-power, I made a choice, previously uncharacteristic of myself, and actually showed up. I didn't force a smile and I didn't even talk much about what ailed me. Somehow the act of merely being there was just what I needed. I went home that night feeling a sense of peace and relief. I realize a little more since then, that even though most of us often perceive other people as having it all together and being on better terms with God than we are, that no one actually has it down pat; it's true that we're a work in progress!

As sad as I was to experience the end of my last small group, I'm eagerly looking forward to the start of a new one. Sure, it will be a relief to have a tool to break through the dark days of winter, but I also think about the people with whom I have yet to connect and what new things I'll uncover within myself in the process. In Matthew 18:20 Jesus says to his disciples, "For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

If you need to feel an example of how those words actually exist beyond on the page in the Bible, I'd say that small group is a perfect place to start.
